2012: Warp XX

Warp XX challenged students to build “space elevator” robots. The robots were tasked with grabbing game pieces on the group, climbing up a pole, and then scoring those pieces in containers and on pipe at the top of the pole. The game pieces ranged from wiffle balls to heavy cardboard boxes cardboard boxes and unworldly foam boards. The most successful robots maximized pole climb speed by calculating the force required to move the robot up the pole, had light and stable arms with specialized manipulators for the game pieces, and centers of gravity near the poles to prevent undue friction and shifting.
